Marina tells the tale of two teens exploring a spine-chilling mystery in 1970's Barcelona. Becoming entwined in a sea of secrets, the pair must get to the bottom of the puzzle before their own lives are endangered. While beautifully exploring the connection of these two individuals, Marina also vividly illustrates the magical atmosphere of Barcelona in the late 1970s, taking us back in time to experience the enchanting city through the eyes of Oscar Drai.

I read the entirety of this book during my trip to the beach and could not put it down. From the magic of Barcelona to the horror of a man's desperate experiments, this story will always leave you wondering what comes next.

Writing Style

Zafón tells his story through a string of captivating metaphors and vivid imagery. In this tale he manages something unique: he uses setting as a character. In Marina, the development and attributes of Barcelona are equally as important as the journey of Oscar and Marina. Near the beginning of the narrative Zafón notes, "Time and memory, history and fiction merged in the enchanted city like watercolors in the rain." This impactful line sets the scene for the rest of the account. Oscar and Marina practically travel back in time to the fabled time of lively opera, mad scientists, and intriguing scandals through their exploration of the city. The author also weaves hints of gloomy, eerie imagery throughout the beginning of the novel in order to foreshadow the alluring gothic tale to come. In one interview Carlos Ruiz Zafón walks listeners through his writing process, comparing the creation of prose to composing a piece of music. Indeed, his writing style does prove to be quite lyrical, gripping readers from the beginning until the end.

Characters

Oscar begins his story living a dull life trapped in a convent school. When he meets Marina, everything changes. Throughout the story he shows his insecurity, fear, hope for the future, and desire to do the right thing. Oscar proves to be a clever, occasionally careless detective, and a loyal friend. With the story being recounted from Oscar's perspective, his character proves to be the most relatable. His vulnerability draws readers in and helps them to connect to the story and find pieces of themselves within the words. Marina is a daring, strange girl who changes Oscar's life. She slowly draws him out of his shell and shows him how to enjoy life and appreciate Barcelona for all of its history and wonder. However, if there is one thing that I would criticize about this book it would be the characters. At times, it is difficult to connect to Marina and view her as a real person. However, that may only be due to Oscar's view of her, which would still contribute to the plot of the story in a necessary way. The character development in Marina is worth witnessing, not to mention the colorful cast of supporting characters livening up the tale as well. If nothing else, just consider the fact that this book features a moody cat named after Franz Kafka. What more could you ask for in a strange, gothic tale?

Plot

The plot of this story is unlike any I have read before. The structure carefully balances Oscar's developing friendship with Marina and her father, the teens' investigation and interviews of individuals involved in an intriguing forgotten mystery, and flashbacks from the time of the mystery's origins. Throughout their investigation, the two encounter nightmarish horrors and occasionally narrowly escape with their lives. It is an exciting tale, and it is considerably interesting to read about the backgrounds and history of some of the characters who were deeply involved in the mystery.

Genre-Defying

Branded simply as "a gothic tale," Marina truly has something for everyone in the genre department. The author describes this novel as his transition from young adult to adult fiction. Simultaneously chilling enough to leave adults biting their nails and suitable for children, the book is able to satisfy a wide range of audiences. Additionally, the story includes a powerful blend of science fiction, fantasy, gothic fiction, romance, adventure, mystery, horror, and tragedy. While the mixture may sound chaotic, Zafón blends these elements seamlessly to create a captivating world for readers to fall into.

Carlos Ruiz Zafón

There is an author's note included at the beginning of the novel revealing that this book is the author's personal favorite out of his works. The story is particularly special to him because it represents the closure he felt as he said goodbye to his youth and transitioned into adulthood. I feel that when an author is so personally connected to a project, it typically yields spectacular results. This book is no exception.

This book left me with a feeling of nostalgia for a place that I have never been. Although this story may leave you with a strange impulsive desire to book plane tickets for Barcelona, it is well worth the risk. I had to wait almost a week to start reading another book after Marina out of the fear that nothing could be as good. Have you read this book? If so, be sure to leave your thoughts in the comments!
