The author does a great job of contrasting Violet's slow healing and journey towards happiness and Finch's constant struggle and the darkness seeping in. The author alternates between Violet and Finch's perspectives.

Plot and Characters

The novel heavily revolves around the characters. The plot and character development go hand in hand in this story of the internal struggle and growth of two teens. Violet Markey and Theodore Finch meet at one of the darkest points in one another's lives. Somehow, they wind up saving one another from a mistake that they could never take back. Slowly, they begin to let light seep in as they explore the wonders of Indiana together for a school project. They begin to lift one another up and change each other for the better. However, their happy moments may not be enough for Finch. This novel explores mental health in a way that is important to talk about. Finch feels isolated and alone, but even when he gains the help of Violet, he is still drawn towards darkness. The novel portrays the horrors of depression intricately through the vessel of a relatable teen boy. He does everything he can to lift Violet up, even as he is being dragged down.

The Wandering Found

This novel inspired a group of 6 young men to come together and write an entire album of music inspired by Jennifer Niven's touching story. One of the members of the band called The Wandering Found read the book and instantly began creating ideas for music. Their album The Great Manifesto explores the themes of the book in a way that allows listeners to connect with the story in a deeply emotional way.
